What this is

A short reflection on the shadow, after Jung: the qualities a person has disowned, gathered here into eight figures. The map at the end ranks the figures by how loudly each one is speaking in you now.

  1. IThe FurnaceAnger and assertion
  2. IIThe ThronePower and ambition
  3. IIIThe OrphanNeed and dependence
  4. IVThe Hungry OneEnvy and desire
  5. VThe MirrorVanity and recognition
  6. VIThe FeralInstinct and indulgence
  7. VIIThe FoolFailure and inadequacy
  8. VIIIThe SaintSelfishness and boundaries

How it works

Twenty-four statements, three for each figure. None of them asks about the disowned quality directly. Each probes one of three things a disowned quality leaves behind:

  • The TriggerDisproportion in your reaction to other people.
  • The RuleOver-identification with the persona, the shadow’s opposite.
  • The LeakIndirect expression.

You rate each statement on a five-point scale:

How to answer

Quickly. The first answer is usually the honest one. Answer as the person you have been this year, not the person you are trying to become. If a statement produces a small jolt of defensiveness, that jolt is data; rate it, then move on. Nothing leaves this browser.

The full method, including what a self-report reflection cannot seeOr, rate someone you can’t stand instead, and see what that turns up about you.
